Art is my soul’s expression in color.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Art has always been a deep part of me, something my soul has carried throughout my life. Before my mother passed away when I was twelve, she told me never to wait to do the things I truly wanted. That stuck with me. Although I lived a full and busy life, the dream of making art never left me. I took classes when I could, but life often got in the way. Now, in retirement, I’m finally giving myself permission to fully listen to that inner voice. Creating art lets me pour my history, emotions, imagination, and spirit onto the canvas—it’s my way of putting my DNA into the world.
BIO
Lori Hinton is a contemporary artist based in San Diego, California. A retired nurse practitioner, professor, and expert witness in national catastrophic legal cases, she completed a PHD in addition to postgraduate training in special areas of rehabilitation and forensic life care planning.
Her dreams of being an artist were put on hold due to career and family obligations. But in the 1990s she was encouraged by a fellow artist and began taking watercolor classes at the Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas. Despite early frustrations, her mentor pushed her to pursue a more expressive style through quick acrylic paintings, which led to a breakthrough in her artistic journey..
After moving to San Diego in 2011, Lori reengaged with the local art community, holding leadership roles in the San Diego Watercolor Society and eventually resuming her own creative practice through classes at Art on 30th. She has exhibited widely, won awards, taught workshops, and had two solo shows. Her art, often inspired by seascapes, nature, and abstraction, reflects her vibrant personality and resilience.
